This week's Movies in Review
Freedom Writers - This was an Excellent Movie. I liked it very much. I found Hilary Swank and her uptight, naive smile a bit much, but the story itself was great. This is a true story about the school system not only failing our children, but actually giving up on them completely without even trying. It's horrible to think that places remain in this country where our children have to attend a school that is so racially divided. It makes me wonder how far away from segregation we have already traveled. The point of the story was terrific though, and the teacher was wonderful at getting them to realize that they are all the same, despite their appearance. I just thought this was a great movie...a good story well told.
**** I Loved It
Smokin Aces - I Liked this movie. I wondered, because I thought it would be very Quinten Terentino-ie, and maybe it was a bit, but I just thought it was fun to watch. I always get a kick out of Ari (Jeremey Piven) on Sunday night's Entourage, but it was fun to see him strung out. I thought he did it brilliantly. His character wasn't actually that far from Ari as far as asshole-ness is concerned. Ben Affleck was as annoying as always and had trouble remembering that his character had an accent (& a bad one at that...he grew up in Boston...are you kidding me?) ... for me the best part was when he was shot and one of the Nazi brothers played with his dead body...best acting I've ever seen him do. It was a strange movie, and you had tp pay attention, but I did enjoy it.
*** I Liked It
Blood Diamond - OK. This was a good movie. I never think I will like anything with Leo (DiCaprio) in it, but I seem to always like them. He really is a good actor. This story opens your eyes to a world you most likely didn't even know existed. I never knew diamonds even came from Africa, let alone how they are harvested. It's a horrible thing that goes on on that contenant every day, and most of it is hard to acknowledge. Djimon Hounsou is also awesome (a long way from his Janet Jackson video days). He plays a man taken from his family to work in the diamond mines and when finally freed can not locate his family. Leo learns that he has found the mother of all diamonds and promises to take him to his family if he takes him to the large rock that he burried. Leo's character of course lies, cheats and steals for every thing that he has in life, and even though he shows signs of a heart through out their journey, his devilsh side keeps reappearing. He maintains his selfish, bastard character until the very end. This is a horrible story to tell, but it is done well. It is shocking to your soul, but not so grusom that you cringe at every shot. Iliked it and recomend it to people that like truth based dramas.
