What Ever Happened To

When did Birthday's stop being fun?  At what age do you decide to stop pointing them out?

I honestly don't know that it is an age thing....Like my Peter Pan mother, I age with each twirl around the Sun, but I don't ever feel any older, so the number really doesn't weigh on my mind at all.  I think it's just lack of interest.  Actually I blame my husband. (if I can say that)  Birthdays are just a pain in the...neck...to him.  He hates his own, and bitches about everyone else's and the damn parties.  And from what I have learned, they were never celebrated in his house growing up....apparently, you got a slap on the shoulder, a "Hey, Happy Birthday Kid," and maybe for milestone birthday's only, a cake!  There was no singing...no presents...no family....that was it.  Now I know this family he speaks of quite well, and I kind of don't think it was quite that under played, but I do believe at the same time, that they did not make that big of a deal of it either.

For me growing up, birthday's were the biggest day of your year.  You had a great party with all your friends.  There was Marble cake with an awesome decoration job that mom did....games...goodie bags...presents...hats!  It was wonderful...and on your actual birthday, you still got more..it was always a BIG deal!!  And for me there was a notorious countdown to 'Michelle Day' that began on Feb. first every year.  But not anymore...today I woke up, changed a diaper...watched the Wiggles until Brett came home.  That was my day...cartoons from the recliner.  Finally I decided on an outing with my little girl.  I had planned to go to the playroom at the children's museum, but they were closed for repairs....of course....so instead we went to the mall...where my daughter thought she was all that and a bag of chips in her stroller.  She loved the Disney Store and whined when I tried on shoes.  We stopped for a bottle in the mall center court and then pressed on.  It was nice.....but mall walking?  Are you kidding me? I turned 34 not 70!

I should have gone to Chuck E Cheese.  Maybe next year for the big 3 5.

(P.S.  I am presently (no pun intended) wearing my daughter's Mickey Mouse Ears to feel festive...God help me)
