The Grammatical State of The World

Does the Grammatical State of the world today frighten you?

It terrifies me what I see in emails and letters these days.  Do they even bother teaching grammar and letter writing in school anymore?

Now I myself fall victim to the short email...the five lines of run on sentences showing complete disregard for all rules of punctuation and sentence construction.  But I do try to practice what I was taught.  I may screw up a preposition....and I may punctuate incorrectly....Lord knows I do.... but, I always take the time to clearly define paragraphs, use Capitals where they apply, and I try to at least find the correct punctuation in my sentences (although if you ask my mom I over use the Comma.)  I am guilty of the ellipses (...) in blogging and emails...I use it (see right there) as a way of taking a breath without ever putting a clear stop to my current thought.  That's my big construction flaw.

But what scares me is the letters and emails I get from my nieces.  They are horrible.  There are no breaks in sentences, or thoughts for that matter.  There is no flow to what they are saying, thinking or communicating.  There are no paragraphs.  No Periods.  I have never seen an indent.  In fact I'm quite certain at this juncture that the "Indent" may have been removed completely from the English writing language.  And whats sad is that they're not ever trying to use internet lingo...it's not like they're writing LMAO and I'm just too old and stupid to get it.  These are just plain poor English, bad grammar, mistakes....and they make me nuts!   Don't they teach this stuff anymore in school?  I remember having entire semesters dedicated to letter writing....properly addressing and closing a correspondence.  I know it wasn't just Westmoreland School either, because they did it in the movie Summer School....remember Chainsaw got the sun glasses for the entire class?

What's worse is that I see the same pattern in adults...adults that I respect and that know how to construct a clear thought in the form of a sentence.  It makes me sad sometimes what I read and I can't even concentrate on what they are saying, because of how they are saying it.

I think as a people we are getting lazy.  We have figured out the short cuts, and we have finally learned that no one will slap our hands with a ruler if we run on.  There is no Dunce cap for not using a period.   We are victims of a society we have created....but what will come of the next generation?  Will they even know how to create a proper sentence?  How will they communicate???

                    IDk, but IG2G...
