From Dilly Bars to Car Checks
When I did well on my report card (all E’s for excellent) I was treated to Dairy Queen. That was my favorite place to go. Dennis the Menace was the mascot and there were always cool video games to play, like Pac Man, Asteroids and Space Invaders. My Dad would order a Peanut Butter Parfait (or Barfait as I would call it) and I always got a Dilly Bar.
I remember, One time on Griffiss, on the way home to our house in WoodHaven, we were held up by "Car Checks." They were checking every single car coming and going from the base. I don't know if there was an incident or if it w as a routine drill. We were just trying to get home, but that didn‘t matter. Everything had to be checked. I can recall it like it was yesterday. We sat on Ellsworth in that line for hours. I remember being five years old and sleeping most of the night in the back of the car.
Life was good...and we were safe.
