Is "texted" really a word?

Is it just me or does it sound completely illiterate to say?

Every time I hear someone say it I cringe.

I know Text is now a verb.  It is an action we take to send a message through our mobile phones....so the past tense would be Text-ed.  But it just sounds wrong...like the word, Asked...that sounds stupid too.

I just can't bring myself saying it....if Texted is about to come out, I stop and reword to "I sent a text"...
somehow that sounds more intelligent to me.
