Adrian Update
Wednesday I took Adrian in for her blood work. Yesterday the vet called with the results.
Where her counts all went down, they did not change as much as they had hoped. Bottom line he said, is that Adrian is in advanced, chronic renal failure. She has lost 75% function of her kidneys already. Our instructions are to watch to see when she stops eating and drinking, then we contact them at that time.
I took the news like a big girl. After all she has not even appeared sick to us prior to the news last week. She's just not a complainer. We did find however that Wednesday she had vomited everything that she had eaten. We only noticed because she was locked inside. That makes us wonder how much she has been doing outside....she's just a polite little girl and excuses herself to be sick in private.
So I hung up the phone knowing I now had to call her Dad and let him know. But first I made the mistake of turning around. I found her standing in the door way with anxiously eager eyes. It was as if she knew who I was talking to and patiently awaited her test results. That's when I began to cry.
I pulled it together and called Brett. Then I sat on the floor with her and explained our situation. She listened intently, and then immediately got up and ran after Eric Harrison who was walking his dog out back. She doesn't seem sick to me, I thought.
Later however Adrian seemed almost depressed. She did not eat much of anything yesterday....mostly just Ellen's left over Wendy's. But not much of her new food not did she have any interest in the boy's Pedigree. But again, how long has this been going on....I just don't know.

Now we just wait and watch her for signs of deterioration. The veterinarian said failure to eat or drink, weight loss (as if she could loose more) and of course if she begins acting lethargic. He said she's not in any acute pain, but her whole body is shutting down so there are levels of discomfort for her.
I think she'll go to the stable with me again today. I'll let her run in the indoor areana while I walk Fox and maybe eat some poop....her breath already reeks from the urea that's not being broken down any longer by her kidneys, so what's a little horse poop.
-----------------------------------------------------
We had a few more questions regarding this renal failure....so I put a call into the vet.
I just got off the phone again with them...they are all so nice there. Dr. Gilchrist said normally with a dog whose levels are as high as hers are he would estimate about a month to live. But he said judging by the patient, it's hard to say. She seems like a normal healthy dog. As he said this to me she of course, let out a bark and flew out the doggie door to chase the contractor working next door.
The homeopathic pill he prescribed, Azodyl, unfortunately will not help her oder issues too much. That was not the answer I was hoping for, but that's ok... we can deal with it.
The good news is that it is not considered Hereditary, so we don't have to worry too much about Jr.
The bad news, is that our girl will probably not make it to Christmas.
Say a prayer for Adrian, and we will enjoy our little girl as long as we've got her.

Isn't she pretty....

I'm so sorry about Adrian. She's such a sweet dog, and we all love her very much. With luck she'll live past Christmas!!
