Winter Weather Barn Tips
Ok..there's not much you can do with the cold in a barn....but here are a few tips.
One...PAM cooking spray on their shoes before turn out prevents the snow build up in their feet. Of course if you have a big barn, this is a hassle, but if you have only one or two...it might be worth the effort.
Two...Buy a large wire, mesh, handled cooking strainer. Pound out your buckets with a small mallet and scoop out the ice with the strainer into another bucket. It's always best to turn the buckets over and pound out all of the ice, but if you don't have a lot of time or if you have a big barn...this is a big time saver.
Lastly....an old sock! Tie it snuggly around your bits to keep them warm and cut down on time spent warming your bit in your already cold hands before bridling.
Hope that helps!
OH one last thing...if you have an old guy like mine who struggles to properly lift his tail when he has a big rug on with a tail flap....and maybe some of his tail gets...well...sucked back into the hole after pooping.....a little braid of those shorter hairs will keep them from getting stuck and will prevent this nasty problem.
