I was thinking about my friend's sixteen year old daughter in Washington D.C. this weekend. My friend's bi-racial sixteen year old daughter...
I wondered what she might say if someone interviewed her on her thoughts regarding the first black president of our great nation. My mind then wandered to all of the things that people would be saying through out the country over the next week. The educated...the poor...the avenger...the proud...the white...the black...the purple...
....every one has their take on this historical moment.
....everyone has a take on every thing.
This is what I decided she should say if someone questioned her thoughts...her take on this inaugural event.
Bean, if someone approaches you and prompts you with the question that is on everyone's minds.... "how do you feel about Obama representing you as the first African American President of the United States." I want you to respond with class and dignity. Tell them that, 'Obama represents the American people....everyone in this country, and maybe if people would stop painting the color lines...then maybe they would finally be able to fade away.'
This is a monumental and historical event and I am very proud that I voted in his favor. I just hope this means that the country as a whole can see it as a victory for all America and that it's not just a race thing.
(Although I will say, it's about time...and good for you!)
