Gleek Confusion
Tonight we curled up in the chair for bedtime and watched Glee (like we do every Tuesday night) and on que... like she does every single Tuesday, Ellie began asking questions about 'Kirk.'
This started weeks ago when she defiantly told me he was not a boy. I have told her repeatedly, every episode since then that he is in fact a boy. When he sings with the other boys at the All Boys school (the Warblers I think they are called) she gets worked up again begging to understand who is a the boy and who is the girl in the duet.
I see her mind reeling over this. She's trying to make it sense of it.
Tonight, I tried once again to explain Kirk. She wasn't as dug in on her idea of boy or girl. She was more receptive tonight. We talked about how some girls talk with deeper voices or dress like boys, while some boys speak more like girls and sometimes dress fancier. She finally yielded the notion. She accepted that people are all different. I explained that Kirk has a beautiful singing voice and that I enjoy him quite a bit on the show... she agreed that she likes him too.
My daughter is very caught up in gender specifics. The idea of blue for boys, pink for girls. Boys and girls get married. Girls wear dresses (like she's never once looked at what I'm wearing) I've already had to correct her that anyone that is in love can get married... These ideas are all innocent and they're okay, however I do need to prepare her for the world she is growing into.
People are free to be whom ever they need to be. We are not to judge them. This is tonight's lesson.
