Do-Gooders Fur Real
Wednesday afternoon my daughter got off the school bus without her little brown Fur Real Puppy. She was heart broken, but understood that she has to take better care of her things and that we would do what we could to get him back.
I called the school and explained what happened and that we were newbies to the School bus asking what the protocol was for this situation. The lady on the phone was semi-helpful. Told me that it will hopefully still be there tomorrow and that was it.
So we crossed our fingers...
The next day Ellen jumped off the bus merrily, trotted up the driveway [puppy in hand] ran through the house yelling, "Mommy, Mommy! A little girl found my puppy and put it in her back pack... (panting from running) she brought it home in her back pack to keep it safe for me!!"
She was thrilled!
(so were we...)
I later asked Ellie if this was one of the girls she always sits with, or if she knew her at all. She did not. She didn't know her name or ever shared a seat with her.
Another child picking it up was what I feared most would happen... what I did not expect was that the child would do that in an effort to safely return it to my daughter. I'm ashamed to admit that this child's actions surprised me.
In a world where all we ever hear about are Bullies.., maybe once in a while this type of story should be told. Maybe share a little more of the good in humanity rather then so much evil. Perhaps first time parents like myself could then put more faith in the other children. Maybe even stories of do-gooders and "nice" children could stand as some kind of example for the ones that aren't sure yet how to be a better person...
I don't know, but I owe her school bus mates an apology and hope someday I can thank the little girl for going out of her way to help mine. It was a small and simple gesture, but it was a nice one and should not go unrecognized.
Thanks little girl on the school bus
